See how we really operate.
We documented our 2024 harvest season - the equipment failures, weather challenges, and daily decisions. This 20 minute film shows how our operation actually runs and introduces the people that make it happen.
What Guides Our Decisions
Four principles shape how we farm, build relationships, and develop our team.
Excellence - Pursuing the highest standards in everything we do.
We strive for the highest standards in everything we do. From hay tickets to shop tools, crop decisions to team management - excellence means we give everything we've got. We're not perfect. Things get messy and we make mistakes; but excellence is the pursuit of the best approach within our skills and knowledge, then adapting as we learn.
Stewardship
Farming requires a patient investment mindset, not merely the pursuit of a quick win. We prioritize the long term benefits for the land and our production partners.
Integrity
We do what we say we'll do, even when no one's watching. When something goes wrong, we own it and figure it out. Relationships survive because we address problems instead of avoiding them.
Development
We're constantly growing - people, skills, humility, and systems. Our goal is to continue improving so we can scale and stay sustainable for the long term.
Where we started and where we are going
From $80 to Five Generations
In 1965, Ron and Janice Bos started with $80, a borrowed tractor, and 750 acres of Montana dryland. Ron had been farming alongside his father since he was young. This photo shows Ron farming in 1987 while his son, Brian, runs the combine in the background.
What started as Ron working the land alongside his dad eventually became Ron working alongside his own sons. As the boys grew up, they learned the operation from the ground up. By the time 56 years had passed, his operation was ready for the next generation to lead.
The Next Chapter
As Craig grew up farming with his dad, he began forming his own vision for the operation's future - one centered around a challenge he was determined to address:
How do you cultivate excellence while developing people of integrity in an industry that demands everything?
In 2021, Ron passed the operation to Craig, and daughter-in-law Allison. They now lead Bos Hay & Grain into its next chapter.
Today, Craig and Allison manage farms across the Gallatin Valley, working with many landowners and producing premium crops for local, regional, and international markets. But their focus extends beyond acres and yields - they're building lasting relationships with their team, their landlords, and their community. This approach shapes everything they do.
Our Vision
Craig's vision of using farming as a platform for developing genuine connections comes to life with his team in day to day operations. Whether it's a young employee learning to drive truck for the first time or a landlord taking a few passes in the combines, these moments are key. The relationships extend in every direction from vendors to customers. Each one is an opportunity for a genuine partnership.
The work is demanding. Equipment fails, deadlines press, weather threatens. We’re learning that these pressures and this environment are catalysts for relationships to grow. This is what Bos Hay & Grain is about - cultivating excellence in agriculture through faithful stewardship of land and relationships.
